After the hoo ha over the weekend of Melania Trump channelling Jackie Kennedy a colleague commented that Jackie’s blue suit was in fact white.
Upon digging a bit further I discovered that it was kind of true, the Suit is described on the JFK presidential library site as greige, not white. “The surprising choice of greige was a brilliant one, for in this neutral color, Mrs. Kennedy stood out from all the other women swathed in jewel-colored coats and dark furs.” Somehow I feel this is a typo as beige is a dull enough colour as it is. To call it greige, literally kills the colour.
It was not uncommon in the day for black and white photos to be ‘colored’ and it my guess that a well meaning person decided that Jackie would look better in a powder blue suit to match, which I hope is correct, JFK’s blue tie. What is interesting is that this image is in the Time Life files so one would expect it to be true. Sadly, the work of one well meaning person has literally ‘coloured’ our view of history. The actual jacket exists in a the presidential library along with other of the former first ladies outfits.
We have all heard the new term #fakenews and it appears, that again, fakenews has reared its ugly head. So, if in fact she was channelling Jackie, this is more likely her inspiration.
The image of jackie in her pink suit, of which she was fond of pink, is depicted here in an image from a wax work model of her which can be found on multiple websites.
I am looking forward to seeing Melania’s fashion choices in the future. Nothing original has happened in fashion since the 1970’s everything is a rehash or a reworking of something that has already existed. Let’s see where inspiration comes from and who it is accredited to.
